Lucy Ellis - The Back Story
Lucy has bottle blonde hair, pale blue eyes and is 5’7”. Of chunky build she is nonetheless attractive and likes to show off her ample cleavage. She always dresses to impress but manages to look “tarty” rather than classy. On the weekend she enjoys shopping for clothes and makeup and had her 1st Botox injection aged 27.
Lucy is soft spoken which on 1st meeting suggests sensitivity and vulnerability, but it is a persona she uses to gain trust and openness from others. Men find her flirtatious and women respond to her friendliness, disarmed by her stories, gossip and fashion interests. She likes to have her own way however, and typically moves people and situations around in her head like a game of chess. She doesn’t care about how her actions might affect other people but takes care that she is not implicated in their downfall whenever she is the cause.
Lucy’s cynicism stems from her broken home. Her father left when he lost his job, devastating her mom. She started drinking heavily and staying out all night which affected her daughters already upset from their father leaving. Lucy’s older sister, Lindsay, had a baby at 16 and left home to be with her boyfriend. The child was often left with the grandmother and Lucy to look after, causing resentment and stressful arguments.
When Lucy was 16 her boyfriend Jem persuaded her to leave home with him on his motorbike and join a gang. Before they were due to leave however, Jem was beaten up by the gang leader and Lucy was raped. After that they broke up. The experience hardened her attitude towards men and made her determined not to feel vulnerable ever again.
Luckily, an interest in amateur dramatics helped to restore her self-confidence, as she discovered a talent for acting in the leading role of a school play. She found solace on the stage, and her character’s feelings and situation helped her develop a deeper understanding of human nature.
Her parents were lost in their own worlds. Her father was a failed poet and author and took work in a local parcel depot to support his family. He lost his job when he got into a fight with his cousin over a family inheritance. The inheritance consisted of an antique gold watch and $20,000 of government bonds which Lucy’s granddad had left her in a Trust and managed by her father to be used for her education. The fight was over the terms of the Will and meant that Lucy, aged 17, was called upon to give evidence that she witnessed her grandfather give the watch and bonds to her father to look after for her.
The drama of the Courtroom and the power displayed by the Judge and the attorneys were the inspiration for her future career. Here was a chance to have real influence over people and their lives. Lucy felt her heart race at the prospect. She had been staying behind in the library to avoid going home, fearful of babysitting duties and arguments. Out of sheer boredom she completed homework tasks but soon found good grades. After her court appearance her teachers started mentioning community college. She seized this new opportunity and was awarded a place.
The business of being the center of attention combined with a clever use of words and argument seemed to offer a natural stage for Lucy. She saw how she could play the leading role in what was, after all, a real live “play”, which would give her ample opportunities for using her knowledge of acting and her love of being the center of attention. Any thoughts about the truth or morality or even the human story of the person on trial never entered her head. It was all about her and the power she could yield. She began to understand how the job of being an attorney would give her the possibility of another kind of life.
In 2004 while in Law school and doing her internship at the DA’s office, she meets and marries a successful businessman. She feels secure at last and graduates 3 years later. During her internship, the DA faced allegations for sexual misconduct with interns Lucy wasn’t one of the interns, but she does know one of the girls. Lucy made sure to collect a piece of foolproof evidence, which she keeps hidden for a rainy day.
After Law School, Lucy takes the BAR but fails it. In fact, it’s after her fourth attempt when she finally passes, 3-years later. During that time Lucy runs up a number of jobs with law offices working basically as a clerk and is fired from everyone.
Her very first case is that of Marco Tirelli’s work comp case. Lucy is anxious to win to impress her bosses, due to some being reluctant to hire her. She’s given this first case and is told to shuffle the papers to get her feet wet because the carrier wanted to settle.
But Lucy has a different plan. She decides to fight the case instead and portrays Marco as a fraud. She forms an alliance with Daniel Cooper, the insurance carrier’s claims representative and legal specialist. They conjure up a lie against Marco and accuse him of fraud
Lucy’s husband becomes suspicious of her and starts to wonder if he is the father of her baby. Trust issues emerge and they quickly divorce. Lucy meanwhile is enjoying a new relationship which results in her 2nd marriage and another pregnancy.
